Sarah Boseley, reports for the Guardian today this terrifying statistic that comes from Sir Michael Marmot’s The Institute of Health Equity.
There is one vital measure that hasn’t been included in the assessment of the literacy and numeracy of 5 year olds. Can they picture words and numbers? This simple question about a child’s mental images should be checked for every 4-5 year old and if they have not developed the skill simply teach them. Even better teach every reception year child to develop the skill naturally along with their phonics work and we will see the standards of literacy and numeracy increasing as if by magic.
This is such a simple idea and so powerful, we need to tell every primary school that they are missing a trick and Empowering Learning has low cost products that can guide any school for less than the costs of just one pupil premium.
If you want to know more about how you can implement this in your school, just mail or call me.
