Herbie Update (Part 3)

beachJust 3 weeks out of surgery and our lovely Herbie is happy, healthy, pain-free and enjoying life. He is building up his strength and muscles on the road to a full recovery.  Everyday he shows us new things he can do and never looking back.  When a puppy he taught himself to walk on 4 legs, now he is teaching himself how to do 3 legs and everyday there are more discoveries.

The best news of all is that he had a most unusual tumour but it wasn’t malignant so it hadn’t spread to anywhere else – no cancer.  This is a fantastic result and so against the odds.  His leg was too far gone to be saved by the best in the land, and we now have a happy, healthy, 3-legged dog with a normal life expectancy.  I am beginning to think he really isn’t missing it. He goes for regular walks, meets his friends, is gaining confidence in hydrotherapy, is continuing with his holistic treatments and has learned many Energetic NLP processes.  And the relief of not having to have chemotherapy is immense.  There was a headline on the internet last week saying “dogs have 3 legs and a spare!”

His only complaint is that we try to restrain him a bit whilst he is adjusting to 3 legs. Occasionally he escapes after a rabbit or a ball and he shows us he can still do extraordinary speed.  Our 6 month old retriever puppy, Boz, plays his part in encouraging him to play everyday in the kindest of ways.

9 times out of 10 people take a huge amount of joy seeing his recovery.  Sometimes people feel sorry for him, they shouldn’t as we explain his exceptional story and how happy he is. Everyday we see more progress.  This week we went to the beach at Frinton and to say he was excited is a complete understatement. Running along in the sea he was clearly saying “This is the best ever; why haven’t I been here before?”

We are immensely grateful for the outcome that in no small part was due to all the support and healing we all received.  We could not have wished for a better outcome and we of course have learned an enormous amount.

When I got the test results a few days ago I was running around the house in ecstasy.  Although I had always believed he was healthy, having medical confirmation was like all our Christmases come at once.  Then Herbie appeared, bless him, with the biggest grin ever. He already knew.

What a result. He is a legend and an inspiration to us all.
