“Don’t limit a child to your own learning, for he was born in another time.”

This is a Rabindranath Tagore quote, that seems so appropriate to the work I do.  I continually find that our children are exceptionally talented and they often learn in different ways to the way we learnt at school. Education has changed much, but the pace of change is still not enough for our rapidly evolving young people.

I specialise in visual learning and I find that many of our children have exceptional visual skills, that often far exceed their parents’.  Perhaps they are coming on the planet more visual, perhaps it is all the visual stimulation they get from TV, computer games and the media in all its manifestations. I don’t think it matters the reason, these young people are exceptionally talented and very creative but their visual skills can get somewhat out of control especially when they are under stress.

So it is our role, as teachers, to help them make the best use of their visual skills along with the auditory skills that we tend to focus on. Teaching visually is just part of the challenge, young people can also learn skills to make the best use of their visual memory, which is such an asset in the classroom.

  1. As someone who is using the Empowering Learning methodology I’m amazed at what students are actually doing inside their minds! The most amazing skills which are hidden by their dibilitating symptoms. Time to focus on these positive talents and nurture them, even if we don’t understand them!
